The hijackers are threatening to blow up the plan, according to Reuters.
The report said the aircraft had been flying from the Libyan city of Sebha to the Libyan capital Tripoli. At the moment there are 118 people on board.
Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Musca has confirmed the seizure of the aircraft on his Tweeter account.
“Informed of potential hijack situation of a #Libya internal flight diverted to #Malta. Security and emergency operations standing by,” he tweeted.
