According to preliminary data, the unknown fired three shots at the journalist's head at the entrance to the courthouse where the latter was to stand trial, reported Reuters.

The gunman has already been detained with the motives and circumstances of the incident so far being established. Reportedly, Nahed Hatter repeatedly received various threats from supporters of radical Islamic groups.

The 56-year-old writer and journalist Nahed Hatter was known as a Christian activist and supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Previously, he was sentenced to prison for posting on social networks satirical cartoon and caricatures seen by the Jordanian court as insulting Islam and "defaming Allah."

According to Reuters, one of Hatter’s caricatures depicts a bearded man in heaven smoking in bed with women and asking God to bring him wine and clear his dishes.
