President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko congratulated Ukrainians on the entry into force of the Association Agreement between the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community, and their member states on the one hand, and Ukraine on the other.
“September 1, 2017, is the day that will forever enter the history of our strong and independent Ukraine. Today, the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU comes into full force,” Poroshenko wrote on Facebook.
The President recalled that since January 2016 an in-depth and comprehensive free trade area with the European Union has been functioning.
“Over 6 months of this year, the foreign trade in goods and services of Ukraine with the EU countries has increased by 22%. Almost 40% of our trade falls on the European Union. A historical change has occurred in the geographical structure of Ukrainian exports in favor of increasing its volume to the EU countries. It is an irreversible process of integrating the Ukrainian economy to the EU market," Petro Poroshenko noted.
Earlier, on July 11, the EU Council approved the Association Agreement with Ukraine, thus the European Union finalized the ratification of the Agreement.
It should be noted that the work on the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU took 10 years. Work on the text of the Agreement was completed in 2013. It was signed already in 2014 following the Revolution of Dignity.
During 2014-2017 the Agreement was ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the European Parliament, as well as national parliaments of all EU countries.
On May 30, the ratification of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union was supported by the Senate of the Netherlands. The Netherlands was the last country to ratify the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
