President Almazbek Atambayev said that Kyrgyzstan must be militarily self-supporting, so the Russian base should be withdrawn, UNIAN reports.
“I believe that we did the right thing on the base of Han (the US air base, withdrawn from the country by the decision of President Atambayev). Like it or not. Five years have passed, and time has shown that this was the right decision. In the future Kyrgyzstan must rely only on itself. This also applies to the Russian base,” Atambayev said.
Kyrgyzstan President stressed that after the end of the contract term the base "must be withdrawn."
“Of course, someone could not like it, but I was able to convey my message to the President of Russia, and he understood me,” Atambayev stressed.
BACKGROUND: According to the bilateral agreement, a Russian military base, consisting of four objects: the air base of the Collective Rapid Reaction Force, testing naval base, communications center and autonomous seismic facility, is now located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.
