The summit began with the official meeting of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with heads of delegations of the G20 member states.
First, Merkel greeted the leaders of the European Union - President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and President of the European Council Donald Tusk.
Vladimir Putin came in after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They exchanged a few words with Merkel.
After the arrival of half the guests a slag occurred in the ceremony of the meeting: Merkel had to wait for the arrival of US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who arrived one after another.
The first event within the framework of the summit was an informal meeting, in which only the heads of the participating states will take part. They will discuss the situation in the Middle East and fight against terrorism, after which a photo session will be held. Furthermore, today the leaders will take part in two working events on global economic growth, climate and energy.
Reportedly, thousands of anti-globalization protest against the meeting of the leaders of the "Big Twenty" in Hamburg. Seventy-six policemen were injured as a result of clashes with protesters on the night of 7 July.
