During an interview with "Echo of Moscow", a Russian journalist and TV presenter Anton Krasovsky suggested that the intention of the Kremlin politicians to meet with Shinzo Abe and discuss some foreign policy issues is caused by the desire to "exchange" four of the Kuril Islands for recognition of the Russian Crimea. However, he ironically said that such an exchange is not supported by any legal mechanisms, and is "absolutely cosmic."

“They will give the Kurils. Or rather not Kurils, but the four contentious islands ... Now we will have a peace agreement and smooth returning. This is not common sense. This is absolutely cosmic exchange. In fact, we understand that these are four meaningless islands, the existence of which is acknowledged in Russia only because it is a disputed territory. We understand that it is the Japanese islands. We will exchange one island for the other four,” a Russian journalist said.

Anton Krasovsky noted that, the issue of recognizing the annexation of Crimea will probably not be solved at this point, because "it is not clear how things are going to turn out with the Crimea".

In September, the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a meeting with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko expressed strong support for Ukraine "in solving the problems in the political aspect."
