After the meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that during the talks the Heads of the two states discussed the situation in the Crimea and the Donbas.
"A significant part of our negotiations with the French President was devoted to the situation in the east of Ukraine and in the Crimea, counteracting Russian aggression," the Ukrainian President said.
The French leader stressed that he considers the annexation of Crimea illegal.
“We must understand that aggression comes from Russia, that is, Ukraine is not the aggressor. We also recognize the annexation of Crimea as illegal. We know who started the war. We must overcome this within the framework of the agreements reached," Macron said.
Furthermore, the President of Ukraine noted that several dozen Ukrainians are kept hostages in Russia and in the unrecognized "republics" in the occupied Donbas. According to the press secretary of the President, the issue of the release of political prisoner Roman Sushchenko, who worked for a long time in France, was raised as well.
Emmanuel Macron, in turn, said that France is ready for another meeting of the leaders in the Normandy Format (Ukraine, France, Germany, Russia), where new prerequisites for resolving the situation in eastern Ukraine should be developed.
