The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia in connection with the detention of the Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, the agency’s press service reports.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine voices its protest over the unreasonable detention of the Ukrainian citizen Roman Sushchenko, a correspondent of the National Information Agency "Ukrinform" in France, by the FSB bodies in Moscow on September 30, 2016.

The MFA of Ukraine calls on the international community, in particular the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe and all the authoritative human rights organizations not to stay away from the blatant arbitrariness on the part of the Russian Federation and to join efforts for a speedy end of human rights violations and pressure on independent journalists by Moscow,” reads the statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is "deeply outraged by the fact that the Ukrainian journalist, who arrived to the Russian Federation to visit his relatives, has been detained by the Russian authorities on trumped-up charges of espionage."

“We regard this as the next step in a purposeful policy of the Russian Federation to use the Ukrainians, having come across its authorities, as political hostages in its hybrid aggression against our country,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.

The ministry demanded that the Russian Federation to ensure the rights of the Ukrainian -  in accordance with the international legal obligations assumed by Russia – to provide immediate access to him for Ukrainian consulate officials, as well as immediately release and return him unharmed and unhindered to homeland.

September 30, the correspondent of the Ukrainian National Information Agency "Ukrinform" in France, Roman Sushchenko, was unlawfully detained in Moscow, where he arrived on personal business. The journalist's wife learned about his detention only on October 2, when the Russian media reported that Roman Sushchenko is being held in Lefortovo prison in Moscow on charges of espionage. The Russia’s FSB claimed that Sushchenko is a member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
