In Feodosia, the pro-Russian activists plan to build a Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), on the site where the Khan-Jami mosque once stood, Mufti of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine (Ummah) Said Ismagilov posted on Facebook.
“Several years ago, archaeological excavations were planned there to restore some of those religious complex structures, which is very important for the Crimean historical, religious and cultural heritage. There was even a restoration project,” he wrote on Facebook.
According to Ismagilov, an ancient mosque was a center of cultural and religious life of medieval Crimea.
“Actually, Kafa - medieval Feodosia – was the city of known in the Muslim world Crimean theologians and mystics. Those who had the surname Kafavi - that is, born in Kafe - were the most well-known among the scientists of the Crimean Khanate. Khan-Jami complex was the center of all the scientific and theological thought. Why is it necessary to build a church there? It is not precisely known. But if that happens, all the hopes for the revival of historical and cultural monuments of the Crimea will be given up,” said Ismagilov.
Before the Russian occupation Ukraine was planning to organize archaeological research of the monument and to restore it. According to Feodosia Muslims, invaders are now actively instigating local population to support the construction of the Orthodox Church.
