The occupation of Crimea by Russia led to serious abuses of human rights in the annexed region. This was reported by US State Department Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker on his Twitter page.

Volker stressed that the US policy towards the Crimea remains unchanged.

“Our policy on Crimea is clear - we do not, and will not, recognize Russia’s purported annexation of Crimea.  Russia’s invasion and occupation of that region has led to  serious human rights abuses," he wrote.

In this regard the US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiation also mentioned the fate of the Crimean Tatar people, as cited by Hromadske Int.

Earlier Kurt Volker stated that Russia might return the Crimea to Ukraine just as it regained independence to the three Baltic states, although they were considered Soviet republics for several decades.
He further noted that sanctions will be imposed against Russia until it returns the annexed peninsula.
