October 9, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), refused to vote for a resolution on the return of Russia to its composition, the PACE Vice President, Chairman of the Permanent Delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Ariev reported on his Facebook page.
According to him, the resolution was postponed indefinitely, which means that in 2019 Russia will not be in PACE.
“This is an intermediate, but still a victory! Russia's requirements were not fulfilled. The resolution was postponed because of the pressure of the Russian factor. Indefinitely. It means that in 2019 the Russian Federation will not be submitted to the PACE again,” Ariev wrote.
QHA reported that human rights defenders called for preventing Russia from returning to PACE. Human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk said that in order to prevent Russia’s returning to PACE, 23 teams were formed, each of which was responsible for the national delegation of 23 Council of Europe countries.
Reference: Russia's rights in PACE have been limited since 2014, after Russia annexed the Crimea. In connection with the restriction of votes in PACE, Russia has stopped paying contributions to the budget of the Council of Europe.
Earlier, the Lithuanian Parliament, by special resolution, called on PACE not to restore the rights of the Russian delegation to the Council of Europe. 77 members of the Seimas voted for the adoption of the resolution, none of the deputies opposed it.
