President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that Crimean autonomy will be created to restore the right of the Crimean Tatars to self-determination.

According to the QHA correspondent, the President made a corresponding statement during the evening-requiem, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Crimean Tatar People's Genocide, which takes place on the Sofia Square in Kyiv.

The President stressed that historical justice to restore the right of the Crimean Tatars to live freely on their land will be restored, and the working group has already prepared appropriate changes to the X section of the Constitution of Ukraine regarding the status of the Crimea.

At the same time, Poroshenko said that the Crimean Autonomy will be created in the Crimea, whereas earlier the need to create the Crimean Tatar autonomy was considered. He repeated the name "Crimean autonomy" several times, that's why it can hardly be considered a reservation.

“The right of the Crimean Tatars to live freely on their land will definitely be restored. I am convinced of the inevitability of the triumph of historical justice. Over a year, a working group created by the Constitutional Commission has worked out important proposals for amendments in Section X of the Constitution of Ukraine. These amendments should consolidate the inalienable right of the Crimean Tatar people as the indigenous people of Ukraine to self-determination as part of an independent Ukrainian state. It is this right that the group proposes to recognize as a source of a special status of the Crimean Autonomy, as an indivisible component of a unified Ukraine.”

Petro Poroshenko also partially told about the management bodies in the announced Crimean Autonomy and expressed the conviction that representatives of different nationalities in the Crimea will jointly elect these bodies and live in harmony.

“The proposals of the Working Group are aimed at ensuring equal rights and freedoms for all Ukrainian citizens, regardless of ethnicity, who will reside in the Ukrainian Crimea, liberated from Russian invaders. Together they will elect the representative body of the Crimean Autonomy, which the Working Group proposes to call the Crimean Council, the group proposes to define the specifics of the election of members -representatives of the Crimean Tatar people by a separate law of Ukraine. I am sure that in the Ukrainian Crimea there will be peace and harmony among different ethnic groups: Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, and Russians.”

However, the President of Ukraine stressed that he would not allow the repetition of separatist mistakes in Crimea and the development of a situation that could threaten the sovereignty of the Ukrainian state. For this purpose, the relevant mechanism is proposed in the amendments to the Constitution: the President's right under certain circumstances to introduce a special regime and direct his authorized representative to manage the situation on the peninsula with termination of the powers of the Crimean Council.

"But if a situation arises in the Crimea that poses a real threat to the state sovereignty or territorial integrity of Ukraine, members of the working group propose to allow the president of Ukraine the right to introduce a special management regime in the Crimea by appointing a special state official with the simultaneous termination of the respective powers of the Crimean autonomy authorities. Because we will not repeat the mistakes of the past.”

The President expressed hope that in the near future the working group will finally approve these proposals and submit it to the Constitutional Commission for consideration. He also predicted tough discussions around the issue of the status of Crimea during the passage of these changes in parliament. At the same time, he stressed that the creation of the Crimean autonomy, the introduction of these amendments with regard to the rights of the Crimean Tatar people, will significantly strengthen Ukraine's position in the matter of Crimea's de-occupation.

"We all understand that the discussion will not be easy, I have no illusions, especially when it comes to the parliamentary hall. And we should clearly form our position already today, our vision of the future, in which the Crimea will certainly return to Ukraine. Amendments to the Constitution concerning the Crimean Tatar people are necessary for Ukraine. And to achieve this goal, all political and diplomatic mechanisms are involved in order to return the Crimea. With the introduction of these amendments to the Constitution, we will gain strength in our efforts to restore Ukraine's sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula," Porshenko said.

In turn, the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, People's Deputy Refat Chubarov, speaking at the requiem meeting, noted that the restoration of the rights of the indigenous people of Crimea is possible only by creating the Crimean Tatar national-territorial autonomy within Ukraine. That is, the Mejlis favors this name of autonomy.
