November 30, at a press briefing, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated that the Russian Federation would not regard the words of Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the aim of the operation "Euphrates Shield" as the official position of Turkey.
“As I understand, and yesterday we studied the issue, as this quotation has made a splash, it is not a direct quote, it was said not for the record,” Zakharova said.
Russia prefers to continue supporting the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and at the same time tries to maintain the current political relations with the official Turkey, despite the fundamental contradictions in the views at the military operation.
Earlier, during one of his last speeches in Istanbul, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the operation "Euphrates Shield" implies not only the fight against IS terrorists, but the overthrow of the oppressive Assad regime as well returning the territories of Syria to the Syrian people.
The "Euphrates Shield" is a joint military operation carried out by the special operation groups with the Turkish Armed Forces and the Air Forces of the international coalition against ISIS terrorist organization in Syria. The operation started in the early morning of August 24. The main objectives of the operation are to clear the frontier regions from IS terrorists, increase the border security, provide support for the territorial integrity in Syria, as well as to prevent the creation of so-called "Kurdish corridor” on the southern border.
