The occupation authorities believe that the Google corporation will have to lift sanctions from the Crimea, restarting the Google Play app store on "the territory of the whole of Russia." The decision is motivated by the fact that since Russia considers the annexed Crimea its territory, Google services should operate on the peninsula as well. Russia threatens that otherwise, the corporation will not be able to fulfill the terms of the settlement agreement signed with the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia (FAS), the pro-Russian media reported.
“The settlement agreement is valid throughout the Russian Federation, for users who use Android with a pre-installed app store and Google search. In the event of non-compliance with the terms of the agreement, a direct compulsion through the court will follow,” the source said, citing the press service of the FAS.
Earlier, following the introduction of the US sanctions in 2015 in the territory of Crimea, the work of the Google Play app store, through which the Android operating system updates, and a number of other services, was terminated on the basis of Regulation (EC) No 1351/2014 of the European Council and Executive Order No. 13685 by President of the United States.
