Due to the expansion of sanctions against 15 State Duma deputies, including six illegitimate parliamentarians from the occupied Crimea, Russian Embassy in Canada has expressed disappointment and promised the appropriate response.

The Embassy press secretary posted the following statement on Twitter:

“This will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the entire range of Russian-Canadian relations, which have recently just started to improve. Russia will consider this a hostile act and respond to it on the basis of reciprocity.”

The decision to expand sanctions against Russian deputies has been adopted by the Government of Canada to maintain the necessary pressure on Russia until it fulfills its obligations in respect of Ukraine. The extension of sanctions is also a response to the illegal elections in the occupied Crimea.

It was previously reported that US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against six illegitimate deputies of the State Duma of Russia from the Crimea.

October 20, President of Ukraine and President of the European Parliament discussed the possibility of strengthening sanctions against Russia in the context of human rights violations in the occupied Crimea. The Commissioner of Ukrainian President on Crimean Tatar Affairs Mustafa Jemilev expressed confidence that sanctions against Russia should be strengthened until the aggressor country returns to Ukraine the control over its sovereign territory.
