Starting in 2017, the first battalion of the 97th Regiment 7th Air Assault Airborne Division of Russia will be deployed in the occupied Jankoy, according to the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, former commander of the Russian Airborne Troops Vladimir Shamanov.
“In accordance with the decision of Board of the Ministry of Defense, next year the formation of a separate battalion of the 97th Airborne Assault Regiment, recreated as part of the 7th Airborne Division, to begin in Jankoy. It is planned that this battalion will have been formed by the end of 2017,” Shamanov said.
According to him, on the basis of the battalion, the entire 97th Regiment, hit by a reduction in the late 1990s, will be re-created in a few years.
The former Head of the Russian airborne troops said that this decision was made by Russian Defense Ministry allegedly in connection with a high probability of provocations by the Ukrainian security services in the occupied Crimea.
In early December, the occupiers have formed a part of the land grouping of the historic Black Sea Fleet 32 Army Corps, which had existed since Soviet times.
