The United States will not recognize the results of elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, which will be held in the occupied Crimea September 18, according to the Department’s official statement.

“The United States does not recognize legitimacy and will not accept the results of Russian Duma elections planned for Russian-occupied Crimea on 18 September. Our position on Crimea is clear: The Peninsula remains an integral part of Ukraine. Sanctions in respect of Crimea against Russia will remain until Russia will return control of Crimea to Ukraine,” the State Department informs.

The statement also emphasized the US concern about the humanitarian situation in the Crimea, including the status of the Crimean Tatars, and reports on disappearances and human rights violations.

As QHA reported earlier, the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission will not observe the illegitimate elections to the Duma in the occupied Crimea.

Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov appealed to the Crimean residents calling to boycott the elections to the State Duma of Russia. Conducting illegal elections in the Parliament of the Russian Federation on the territory temporarily occupied Crimea does not only mean the so-called "Crimean MPs" are illegitimate, but also casts doubt on the legitimacy of the entire Russia’s State Duma, he believes.

The Crimean Prosecutor's Office in Kiev threatened to launch criminal proceedings against those involved in the organization of elections in Crimea.
