For four years now, Russia has been carrying out total terror in the territory of the Crimea against its indigenous people, the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Akhtem Chiygoz said at the 17th United Nations Permanent Forum on the Indigenous Issues of the on April 18. The director of the news agency QHA (Crimean News) and Radio Hayat Gayana Yuksel shared a video with the speech delivered by Akhtem Chiygoz.

Chiygoz noted that for four years of Russian occupation, the atmosphere of lawlessness against the Crimean Tatars has taken root on the peninsula.

“Thousands of people persecuted for not recognizing the occupation, hundreds are unlawfully convicted and serving long terms in the colonies. More than 40 people were abducted by these bandits, some of them were found dead with traces of violence. The destruction of the historical and cultural heritage, the restriction in learning and teaching in their native language, the severe ecological situation on the territory of our homeland: here is an incomplete list of lawlessness that Russia is causing in the native land of the indigenous people of the Crimean Tatars,” he said.

The Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis said that the lack of information on the plight of Crimean Tatars in the report of the Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz allows continuing to carry out terror and lawlessness against the indigenous people.

Chiygoz invited her to visit Kyiv, where she could get information about the real situation in the Crimea and called for special attention to be paid to the problems of the Crimean Tatars on the annexed peninsula.

“Dear Victoria, if you are not allowed to the Crimea, then we are waiting for you in Kyiv. We will provide you with complete information on the plight of the indigenous people of the Crimea. Crimean Tatars ask you to intervene and ensure the safety of residence in their homeland,” he said.

On April 17, in New York, where the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is held, Akhtem Chiygoz stated that the Crimean Tatars did not take part in the illegal presidential elections in the Crimea and do not see the future of the peninsula without Ukraine.

The main focus of the forum, which takes place from 16 to 19 April, is respecting the rights of indigenous peoples to their lands, territories and resources.
