Construction work on the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge (Yavuz Sultan Selim Köprüsü), a third bridge over the Bosphorous Strait, is proceeding around the clock and will soon be completed.

Once completed, the bridge will become the world’s widest and longest railway bridge. The progress of the third bridge’s construction can be easily observed from the sea.

Expected to be completed on October 29, 2015, it will become ‘the world’s widest’ (59 m) and ‘the world’s longest’ (408 m) railway bridge. Located on the bridge is the world’s highest tower (322 m), which makes it one of a kind. Availability of 8 traffic lanes and 2 railway tracks will make it possible to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion in Istanbul.

Thanks to the bridge’s railway system, commuters will get to travel from Edirne to Izmir. Under the Marmaray project, the bridge is to be joined with the Istanbul subway system, thus enabling to link up a yet to be constructed airport with the Ataturk and Sabiha Giokchen airports.

Designed by Michel Virlogeux, a structural engineer known as “the French bridge master-builder”, and the Swiss firm T-Engineering, the bridge will allow for uninterrupted traffic flow. Thanks to the bridge, restrictions for freight vehicles will also be removed, thus making it possible for importers and exporters to save time and money.
