From today, access to social networks Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp messenger and video sharing site YouTube will be temporarily blocked in Turkey, CNNTürk news agency reports.

The network lock-up started last night, at 1:20 am local time, as was reported by residents of Istanbul, the cities bordering Syria, and other settlements in Turkey.

This measure is related to the detention of several leaders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, being in opposition to the Turkish Government, and subsequent searches at the headquarters of the party in Ankara, as part of anti-terrorist operation throughout the Republic, especially in the provinces on the Turkish-Syrian border.

The network lock-up, as well as the ban on the publication of information on terrorist acts in the media, is introduced as a precautionary measure in order to prevent information leakage.

This morning, in the Turkish capital, 11 deputies from the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party were detained on suspicion of "propaganda of PKK terrorist organization," "promotion of criminals and crimes," "inciting hatred and hostility," "participation in terrorist organization activity"," violation of the unity and integrity of the state."
