The UN Security Council has adopted Resolution 2370 (2017) on preventing terrorists from acquiring weapons, aimed at preventing a constant threat of the production, storage, transfer, obtaining or use of weapons by terrorist groups, the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations informs.
"The international regime, aimed at curbing arms supply to terrorists, runs into a problem when states, who are supposed to uphold it, turn out to be in breach of their international obligations and commitments in this regard," the statement says.
The Ukrainian delegation noted that one of the most telling cases today is the ongoing flow of all types of weapon systems from the neighboring state to the occupied territories of eastern Ukraine.
“Over 400 battle tanks, 840 armoured personnel vehicles, 200 multiple launch rocket systems, 730 artillery systems and 400 air defense units have been provided to terrorist organizations operating there,” reads the statement.
Ukraine recalled that this weapon was used for a variety of terrorist attacks, including the shooting down of the MH17 flight of Malaysian airlines over the Donbas.
“The rhetorical question is: How did the terrorist organizations in Ukraine get weapons that often surpass armament stocks of many states on the European continent? Or why do not terrorists run out of diesel and munitions?” The Ukrainian delegation in the UN asked.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement-protest in connection with the intensification of Russia's actions in the Donbas and intense attacks by pro-Russian troops, including those using tanks, self-propelled artillery units, rocket artillery and mortars.
Previously, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN on behalf of the Foreign Ministry demanded that the Russian Federation stop further escalation of the conflict in the Donbas.
