Deputy Chairmen of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz met with former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst in Washington yesterday, May 16, the lawyer Nikolai Polozov reported on his Facebook page.
Umerov and Chiygoz also held a meeting with Executive Chairman of Atlantic Council Frederick Kemp and were interviewed by The Washington Post journalist Christian Caryl. Nikolai Polozov attended the meetings as well.
The Deputy Heads of the Mejlis also discussed the problem of the occupation of Crimea by Russia with Congressman Jamie Raskin (Maryland).
“Akhtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov met with Congressman Jamie Raskin (Maryland) and discussed the problem of the Crimea's occupation and repression against Ukrainian citizens - Crimean Tatars by the Russian authorities," the lawyer wrote.
Umerov and Chiygoz also held a discussion at the Center for American Progress, where they spoke about the situation in the annexed Crimea.
“At the end of the day, another meeting was held with human rights defenders of Freedom House, during which Akhtem Chiygoz and Ilmi Umerov raised a number of key issues regarding the violation of human rights in the occupied Crimea and reached agreements on further cooperation,” Polozov informed.
Earlier, Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz held a meeting with representatives of the US Presidential Administration Donald Trump and a representative of Senator Richard Durbin (Illinois). During the meetings they discussed the political situation in Eastern Europe, Ukraine and on the annexed peninsula.
