The main target of the Russian Air Forces and the Assad regime forces is 275,000 people in the East of the city of Aleppo, the US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said at an emergency Security Council meeting.
Russia and the Assad regime continue to adhere to the war principle instead of a peaceful solution to the unstable situation in Syria, the diplomat said, commenting on the situation with the attack on the humanitarian convoy:
"Instead of pursuing peace, Russia and Assad make war. Instead of helping get life-saving aid to civilians, Russia and Assad are bombing the humanitarian convoys, hospitals and first responders who are trying desperately to keep people alive," Power said.
Over the past 3 days, 150 air attacks were carried out, that have claimed 139 civilians. And the hostilities resumed just during the UN General Assembly work on the implementation of diplomatic steps to reduce the level of violence in Syria.
"What Russia is sponsoring and doing is not counter-terrorism, it is barbarism," the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power said, adding that the Security Council must not ignore that violence against the Syrian people.
Russia could not resist commenting on statements of the American representative. Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin said that Moscow does not bear any responsibility for the attack on the convoy and continues to seek compromises to resolve the situation in Syria.
Russia in turn criticized the US. According to Churkin, the Americans did not fulfill their obligations to clear distinction between terrorists and opposition groups, and more than 200 thousand people are held hostage by terrorist groups in Aleppo.
The permanent representative of Syria to the UN Bashar Jaafari negated all the charges against the Syrian government and assured that al-Assad did not use chemical weapons. By the time of Jaafari ‘s performance, the delegates from the United States and Great Britain had left the meeting.
UN Security Council meeting held on September 25 in New York. US, Britain and France decided to hold an emergency meeting due to the situation in Aleppo.
