The main topic of discussion at the 17th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York was the issue of respect for the collective rights of indigenous peoples, according to a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, the director of the news agency QHA (Crimean News) and Radio Hayat Gayana Yuksel.
She noted that the topic of the forum is especially relevant for the Crimean Tatars.
“According to human rights activists, two categories of rights are violated in the Crimea by Russian authorities: a general violation of rights (the right to a fair trial, the right to freedom of conscience, the right to information and freedom of speech, freedom of movement, etc.) and the collective rights of the indigenous people of Crimea, where the whole complex of rights, enshrined in the international documents is violated. In theory, the world has developed all mechanisms for protecting the rights of indigenous peoples, another thing is that their implementation is possible only under wish and consent of all the participants in the process: the state – the indigenous people – other citizens of the state. When one of the executives is a state such as Russia, for example, then the implementation of norms and provisions is impossible,” she wrote.
Gayana Yuksel further noted that Russia is trying to minimize the importance of the forum, while very actively using this platform.
“There is a large delegation of the Russian North, which representatives tell how good their life is and how the state helps them. From Crimea no one was brought this time. In general, if they brought someone, the invaders would contradict themselves: thus they would recognize the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of the peninsula," she stressed.
QHA reported that the Crimean Tatar people are represented at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues by the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Akhtem Chiygoz, member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, director of the news agency QHA ("Crimean News") and Radio Hayat Gayana Yuksel, lawyer Suleiman Mamutov, employee of the television channel ATR Elmaz Asanova.
April 17, in New York, where the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is held, the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Akhtem Chyigoz said that the Crimean Tatars did not take part in the illegal presidential election in the annexed Crimea and do not see the future peninsula without Ukraine.
