Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the World Cup final on July 12 in Rio de Janeiro at the legendary stadium Maracana. After the championship, on July 13 the president will hand over the Olympic flag to the host of the 2016 games, Voice of Russia reports.
Putin will use the visit to meet his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff and attend an official handover ceremony with her. It will be held to pass the right to hold the next championship to the next hosting country.
The next World Cup in 2018 will be held in Russia. The Russian Federation also staged the Winter Olympics in Sochi five months ago. Putin will hand over the Olympic flag to the mayor of Rio, host of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The ceremony will happen either in the box of the Maracana stadium, immediately after the finals in Rio de Janeiro, or already in the Russian House, which is also located in Rio, the newspaper Izvestia reported.
