The World Congress of Ukrainians condemned the illegal presidential elections in Russia, which took place on the territory of the occupied Crimea on March 18.

“The holding of these elections in the occupied territory of Ukraine was yet another attempt by the Kremlin authorities to legitimize the illegal occupation of the Crimea. The World Congress of Ukrainians welcomes the fact that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and other international institutions have refused to delegate their observers to the illegal elections conducted by Russia in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol," reads the statement.

World Congress of Ukrainians welcomed the reaction of the European Union, which did not recognize the elections in the occupied Crimea.

"The World Congress of Ukrainians condemns the illegal occupation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation, which is a blatant violation of international law, and calls for increased international pressure on the Russian Federation until the Crimea is returned to Ukraine and all Crimean Tatar and Ukrainian political prisoners are released," the message says.
