On August 2, activists of the public organization Crimean Solidarity announced a fundraiser called Crimean Marathon. This initiative was launched in response to the fines imposed by the Kremlin-controlled "court" on witnesses of searches in the Crimea. In particular, resident of Bakhchysarai Emil Belyalov, who was fined twice in the total amount of 150 thousand rubles. Each for the presence at the April searches of Bakhchysarai residents by Russian law enforcers.
Another purpose of this fundraiser is to support families of political prisoners and public activists in the Crimean peninsula.
It is worth noting that the initiators of the Crimean Marathon called for collecting Russian 10 ruble coins made in metal and not changing them to paper bills in order to manifest the "unity of those not indifferent".
As of today, within the framework of the Crimean Marathon, activists managed to raise 826 thousand 130 rubles in the Crimea only. This sum will be spent to pay off the unjustified fines of Nariman Memedinov (200 thousand rubles), Server Karametov (10 thousand), Yarikul Davlatov (10 thousand), Vladimir Baluh (10 thousand), Osman and Emil Bilyalov (150 thousand), as well as to pay a fine of 300 thousand rubles to a resident of Bakhchysarai region Zarem, who was charged for pro-Ukrainian posts in social networks.
“With this campaign, we showed that this problem concerns not only those individuals who have been fined, but the whole people, all those who respond, who simply have a sense of humanity and reciprocity. As reciprocity and solidarity is an inalienable feature of our people’s soul," Coordinator of the Crimean Solidarity Dilyaver Memetov said in a video message.
Lawyer Edem Semedlyaev noted that residents of Turkey and many other countries around the world, apart from mainland Ukraine, joined the marathon to raise funds for paying off fines of activists. After collecting all the funds, the organizers will announce the total amount that they managed to raise in the framework of the global campaign.
“This marathon proves once again that we are not afraid of anything when we are together. And any amount goes to the people in a dime," lawyer Emil Kurbedinov concluded.
