In order to limit the influx of migrants Austrian authorities began building a fence of 3.7 km length along its border with Slovenia near the Spielfeld border crossing. The construction is expected to be completed by December 25, Deutsche Welle reports.
It is not the first time when a European country takes such a decision, however, it will be the first fence erected between two EU countries.
In November, 2015, Austria announced that it planned to erect such a fence. According to Josef Ostermayer, Minister of the Federal Chancellery of Austria, the fence is designed not to block refugees from entering the country but to strengthen control and better channel migrants.
The Austrian authorities have also stated that if the measures do not work they will have to put up a full-fledged 25-kilometer fence (4 meters high).
It is reported that several thousand refugees enter Austria from Slovenia every day.
