The First Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Nariman Jelal was summoned for questioning by the FSB. He was the first to be questioned as a witness in the so-called "Ilmi Umerov case."

Prior to this, the Mejlis members Emine Avamileva, Dilaver Akiev and Lenmar Yunusov were also interrogated with regard to this case.

The criminal case against the Deputy Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis Ilmi Umerov was launched at the request of the so-called Public Prosecutor’s Office of Crimea. The prosecution alleged that in March 2016, Umerov, being in Ukrainian territory, publicly called to "violate the territorial integrity of Russia" during his live interview with ATR TV Channel.

Ilmi Umerov was involuntary confined in a psychiatric hospital in Simferopol for three weeks for compulsory inspection, and was released on September 7. However, Umerov announced his intention to continue to defend his rights.
