Today, a mourning rally dedicated to the 72nd anniversary of deportation of the Crimean Tatars has been held in Riga outside the Russian Embassy in Latvia, reported Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Latvia Evgeny Perebiynis on Twitter.
The rally gathered a few dozen people who were holding the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar flags and posters with images of the "1944" date and photos of the Deportation.
May 18, 1944 the Soviet authorities conducted mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea, accusing them of collaborating with the Nazis. About 238 thousand Crimean Tatars were evicted and 46%, mostly the elderly, women and children were killed in special settlements in the first years of deportation.
Today, Kyiv and Ukraine are holding a number of events dedicated to the 72th anniversary of deportation of the Crimean Tatar people: actions and mass rallies, thematic lessons in schools, thematic initiatives by social activists.
