Many lawyers in the occupied Crimea work in bad faith with political prisoners, the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Akhtem Chiygoz stated.
"Lawyers do not work very conscientiously. In some issues, this has turned into a certain stable source of income. In fact, business ... The only source of information [for a political prisoner - Ed.] is a lawyer, because no one else is allowed. And they regularly come - then society, and most importantly, the prisoner knows what is happening outside, how the world reacts. Maybe, we will have to change some lawyers, because the latest events with Uzeir Abdullayev have shown that the guy had a serious illness developing for almost two months, and the lawyer visited him last in February 2018 ... The lawyer simply did not go there," he said.
Also, according to Chiygoz, some of the lawyers in the Crimea are Ukrainian citizens, and some are citizens of the Russian Federation, which also affects the situation with political prisoners.
“Unfortunately, this is our most sore point, because it is difficult to find such people as Polozov. Those who would be politically prepared for these processes. And in this case it is very difficult to find lawyers who understand that this is, actually, also the duty of a person endowed with the status of a lawyer ... Unfortunately there is a small group of lawyers who try to do their best. But here it is necessary to look more widely. Polozov is not just a lawyer who dealt with the legal part of the issue ... He was a translator - the whole world knew ... Most of the lawyers are trying to reduce the case to non-compliance with the norms of the law ... But here comes the political factor. And we need to communicate the political processes," the Deputy Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people said.
Earlier, Akhtem Chiygoz stated that Russia should bear legal responsibility for the persecution of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. He also believes that any actions of the Russian Federation in the Crimea are illegal, since Russia is an invader country.
