The Ukrainian political prisoner Oleg Sentsov`s candidature has been included into the preliminary list of nominees for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
On September 27, a joint meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs and Development and the subcommittee on Human Rights in connection with the presentation of nominees was held in Brussels.
Sentsov was nominated by the European Parliament's largest political faction, the European People's Party (EPP).
Tottaly, eight people and non-governmental organizations that defend the principles of democracy have been proposed to nominate in 2018.
The three finalists of the award will be determined by voting at a meeting of the committee and subcommittee on October 9.
Note, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought was established in 1988 by the European Parliament and is awarded annually to those who defend human rights and freedom of thought.
