By its ban on holding anniversary events in Simferopol on the occasion of Taras Shevchenko's Days, Russian invaders in the Crimea are trying to destroy the Ukrainian national identity, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the International Organizations Igor Prokopchuk stated at the 1135th meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council.
“At the last meeting of the Council, we paid considerable attention to gross violations of human rights by the Russian Federation in the illegally occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. However, a week after that we witnessed further attempts by the Russian occupation authorities to destroy the Ukrainian national identity in the Crimea, as on March 6, Ukrainians were forbidden to hold anniversary events in Simferopol on the occasion of Taras Shevchenko's Days.”
Earlier QHA reported that the Kremlin-controlled administration of Simferopol banned the local activists of the Ukrainian Cultural Center from holding events on March 9 dedicated to the birthday of the outstanding Ukrainian poet, writer, artist and public figure Taras Shevchenko, who has become a symbol of Ukrainian fighting for independence. Despite the ban, several activists still came to the monument to the Kobzar and laid flowers.
