Today, August 23, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the National Flag.
This holiday was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma in 2004. In 1991, on August 23, a group of MPs brought a Ukrainian flag to the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada. Now it is kept in the museum of parliament.
In 2009, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko amended Kuchma's decree by establishing an annual official flag-raising ceremony on August 23 across Ukraine.
The Head of the Ukrainian state Petro Poroshenko stated on his Facebook page, that the State Flag of Ukraine is a sacred guard, a symbol of unity and invincibility of the people.
The Head of the government Volodymyr Groysman also congratulated the Ukrainians on the flag day.
The longest flag of Ukraine was unfolded in January 2018 in Kyiv. The flag was stretched from the European Square and to Bessarabska Square, as well as from the crossroads of Khreshchatyk and Bogdan Khmelnitsky streets.
