Deputy Chair of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov stated that any indictment of the Kremlin-controlled Simferopol district court in his case will be appealed in international courts, according to the message on his Facebook page.
“Tomorrow, on September 27, 2017 at 11.00 the verdict on the "Ilmi Umerov case" will be delivered. This will be the last "Umerov’s Wednesday" in the Simferopol district court. We will be satisfied only with an acquittal. Any decisions of conviction will be appealed against. The next step is international courts. In a completely fabricated case, the prosecutor requests 3.5 years of suspended sentence plus 3 years of a ban on public activities. Part 2 of Article 280.1 of the RF Criminal Code. Public appeals to violate the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation," he wrote.
Umerov believes that the case against him was initiated on the basis of two phrases, pulled out of context.
The FSB in the Crimea initiated a criminal case against Ilmi Umerov on May 12, 2016 for alleged calls on the television channel ATR to actions that threaten the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation.
Ilmi Umerov also expressed confidence earlier that the case against him was fabricated for his pro-Ukrainian position.
