The UN Monitoring Mission in the Crimea has documented a new trend – the illegal interference with professional activities of lawyers in high-profile cases concerning the defending of human rights, the Head of the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine Fiona Frazer said during the presentation of the next UN report in the Ukrainian crisis media center.
Moreover, the occupation authorities in the Crimea resort to torture and ill-treatment to forcibly obtain confessions from detainees, as well as continue transferring the imprisoned Ukrainians to Russia.
“The authorities in the Crimea resort to forced confessions through torture and ill-treatment. Prisoners are still transferred to the Russian Federation, where we the cases of denial of medical care were recorded, as well as the death of at least one of the detainees. The new trend we have documented is illegal interference in the professional activities of lawyers in high-profile cases involving human rights,” Frazer said.
Earlier, QHA reported that on the morning of January 25, lawyer Nikolai Polozov was illegally detained in Simferopol by FSB officers and taken to the office for interrogation as a witness in the case of Ilmi Umerov. The lawyer considers the action by the invaders’ special services as abduction.
The Crimean lawyer Emil Kurbedinov faced illegal actions against himself as well. For his active participation in the defending of the rights of Crimean Muslims convicted in the fabricated case of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Kurbedinov was arrested for 12 days.
