The celebration of the great Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha is ongoing in Kyiv.
About 500 people gathered at the Expocenter of Ukraine to mark this important holiday, a QHA journalist reports.
According to tradition, during the celebration the sacrifice ritual is performed (generally healthy cow or sheep are sacrificed). After that, the meat is cooked and eaten for the common meal.
Today at VDNKh, cook Nazim prepares the sacrificial meat for the guests of the festival.
“The animal was slaughtered yesterday,” says Nazim, stirring pieces of meat mixed with spices in a cauldron. “Cooking recipe is a special secret of our chef Aliya-Abla. It is stewed over the fire for two or three hours. There are three hundred kilograms of meat in all cauldrons (approximately 100 kg per each).
Isa Akayev, the commander of "Crimea" battalion, attended the event as well. His battalion has not participated in the war in the east of Ukraine for about a year.
“In war, we also celebrated Eid al-Adha. Volunteers helped us and brought the sheep. Both Muslims and non-Muslims – all together we sat at the tables. It was all like in Kyiv, but there were no women and children,” Akayev recollects.
Some of those present at the holiday recalled how they celebrated Eid al-Adha in Crimea before the annexation of the peninsula.
“In Crimea, the entire population was involved in Eid al-Adha. Local Mejlises and communities organized celebrations in settlements. Perhaps, in cities, it was not observed so thoroughly but in the villages it was celebrated especially solemnly. Representatives of other faiths were also invited. In Kyiv, the celebration of Eid al-Adha is mostly observed in the circle of Muslims,” says the activist of the Crimean Tatar national movement Sinaver Kadyrov.
Reference. Feast of the Sacrifice or Eid al-Adha is an Islamic holiday, which is marked 70 days after Eid al-Fitr holiday, on the day of the end of the Hajj. It is one of the two biggest holidays for Muslims.
In Muslim countries, Eid al-Adha is an official holiday.
