Complex situation with provision of water in the Crimea "impedes the development of the peninsula and makes difficulties for tourism and agriculture," Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev reported at a meeting on "national security matters”.
"The lack of water hinders the social and economic development of the region, forms threats to the agricultural, sanatorium and resort complexes which are the basic areas for the Crimea economics," Patrushev said at a meeting in Simferopol on June 27.
He also noted that the total water abstraction had decreased fivefold in 2016 compared to 2014.
The area of irrigated land was reduced by 92%, rice production was ended, "freshwater fisheries turned out to be in severe conditions".
Earlier, Ukraine completely blocked the water supply to the Crimea, by building a dam on the North-Crimean channel this spring.
