During the period of the spring conscription, 2,800 people from the annexed Crimea were drafted into the army of the Russian Federation, Crimean Human Rights Group reported, referring to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. According to the human rights activists, last year, 400 people less were drafted into the army during the spring conscription.
Crimean Human Rights Group reminds that the conscription of the Crimeans to the Russian army grossly violates the norms of international humanitarian law.
“Drafting the inhabitants of the occupied territories into the ranks of the army of the occupying power, as well as the propaganda of the service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which continues in the Crimea, violate Art. 51 of the Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War (Fourth Geneva Convention), and the transfer of conscripted citizens of Ukraine from the occupied territory to the territory of the Russian Federation violates Art. 49 of this Convention," the organization said in a statement.
Ukrainian and Russian human rights defenders have prepared recommendations for Crimeans on how not to become a victim of criminal prosecution for evading military service in the Russian Federation.
It should be noted that since the beginning of the occupation, about 12,000 Crimeans have illegally been conscripted to serve in the Russian army.
The spring conscription started on April 1 and ended on July 15. Throughout the territory of the Russian Federation, 128,000 people were to be drafted.
Reportedly, residents of the occupied Crimea illegally drafted into the Russian army will be sent for service in the Strategic Missile Forces.
The Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea asks residents of the occupied Crimea to report on the facts of receiving notices of mobilization in the army of the Russian Federation (RF).
The Prosecutor's Office noted that under the Rome Statute and the Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, the Russian Federation has no right to conscript the Crimeans to the service.
