As a result of the conflict in the Donbas in Ukraine, approximately 580,000 children were affected, legal analyst of the charitable foundation Right to Defense Ksenia Karagyaur stated at a press conference.

International treaties on the protection of the rights of children affected by armed conflict became part of the national legislation of Ukraine, but in fact the state does not fulfill its obligations.

"Children deserve special respect and protection. According to the practice of other states, it is assistance in obtaining social services and not involving them in violence. These world standards that were recognized by Ukraine," Karagyaur said.

According to international organizations, in Ukraine, 1.5 million people have become internally displaced persons and one third of them are children. At the same time, only 8 children were officially recognized as children of war in the country.

Irina Sozonova, the psychologist of one of the rehabilitation centers for children who survived the conflict, notes that due to the complicated procedure for obtaining the status, the state actually deprives children of their constitutional right.

“Many do not apply for the status, because it is humiliation - to prove the fact of a trauma. Parents are different, but we are talking about the rights of children. We understand that any child who was in the ATO automatically becomes a victim of the conflict, because he gets a psychological trauma," the psychologist notes.
