The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin flew to the Russian Khmeimim Air Base in Syria and ordered the withdrawal of Russian military groups from Syria, the press service of the Kremlin reported.

“I order the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff to begin the withdrawal of the Russian group of troops to the points of their permanent deployment," Putin announced.

He further noted that the Russian military were returning from Syria with victory.

At the Air Base Putin was met by the President of Syria Bashar Assad, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and commander of the Russian groups Sergei Surovikin.

Earlier, on November 20, Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Bashar Assad in Sochi. Putin and Assad agreed at the meeting that the military operation in Syria was near completion and that it was necessary to move on to political processes. Assad said he was counting on Russia's support for the political settlement of the situation in Syria.
