The Donbas, occupied by Russian-backed militants, is becoming one of the most mined regions in the world. The corresponding statement was made by the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ursula Mueller at the briefing on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine in New York on October 23.
“Eastern Ukraine also faces serve protection concerns. It is rapidly becoming one of the most mined areas in the world, which, if not addressed, will stall reconstruction and development for many years to come. Mine clearance and risk education is needed in all conflict-affected areas, particularly along the contact line, including the checkpoints at the de-facto boarder," Muller said.
Earlier, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko, during a briefing on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, said that the deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission could help a comprehensive settlement of the conflict.
