Following independence, the Hryvna, a national currency, was launched in circulation in Ukraine.

The Hryvna takes its name from an ancient currency which was in circulation in the Kievan Rus and came in the form of silver bars.

As of September 2, 1996, the Hryvna was launched in circulation as legal tender according to presidential decree № 762/96 ‘On Monetary Reform in Ukraine’ issued by Leonid Kuchma on August 25, 1996.

Launching the Hryvna was a landmark event for Ukraine, and it has been an inalienable attribute of statehood ever since.
