According to the Human Rights Organization Amnesty International, the decision by the "Prosecutor" of Crimea Natalia Poklonskaya to ban the Mejlis goes to prove a new wave of repressions against the Crimean Tatar people.

- The ban on the Mejlis seeks to suppress those differently-minded. As of now, anyone associated with the body can fall victim to serious extremism accusations, said Denis Krivosheev, Deputy Director of Amnesty International in Europe and Central.

The organization stressed that the authorities of the occupied peninsula deliberately persecute those who oppose the annexation of Crimea or have a pro-Ukrainian stance.

As observers with Humans Rights Watch reported earlier, the Russian occupying authorities in Crimea have created "an atmosphere of omnipresent fear and repressions" and have been supporting it for two years since the seizure of the Ukrainian peninsula.
