The "murder" of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko in Kyiv was a staging and a special operation of the Security Service of Ukraine in order to prevent a real threat of murder of the Russian citizen, the Head of the SBU Vasil Hrytsak reported during the briefing.

According to him, a certain citizen G. agreed to commit the murder of Babchenko on the instructions of the Russian special services. He, in turn, commissioned the murder to his acquaintance, who took part in the ATO. For this, he offered the ex-ATO member 30 thousand dollars, 15 of which he gave to him as a deposit. The citizen G. himself received 10 thousand dollars from Russians.

“About 3 hours ago, the perpetrator of the "crime" was caught,” Hrytsak informed.

During the briefing, Hrytsak said:

“I could bring my condolences to the family of Arkady Babchenko, but I will not do it. On the contrary, today I congratulate Arkady on his third birthday and invite him to the hall," said the Head of the SBU, after which Babchenko entered the hall.

Babchenko apologized to his wife and friends, who had to endure heavy feelings in connection with the conduct of the special operation.

“Separate apologies to my wife. Olechka, I'm sorry, but there were no options. The operation was being prepared for two months. I was informed a month ago. As a result of the operation, the person is detained, he is in custody.”

Soon Hrytsak added that the SBU was able to obtain irrefutable evidence of Russia's involvement in the planned "murder" of the journalist.

“The service received information in advance about preparing an attempt on the life of Arkady Babchenko and searching for the perpetrators of the murder. The service decided to conduct an operational combination, due to which we were able to gather irrefutable evidence of the terrorist activities of Russian special services on the territory of Ukraine," Hrytsak explained.
