Speaking at a round table discussion called ‘The banning of the Mejlis in Crimea constitutes disregard for an indigenous people’s right to self-determination and violation of international law", Eskender Beriyev, a Mejlis member, said:

“The ongoing trial makes a mockery of justice and is aimed against an entire Crimean Tatar nation. In fact, according to Ukrainian law, the Mejlis and Kurultay are legitimate and official bodies of the Crimean Tatar people.”

According to Bariyev, the trial is a pretence of justice and is aimed at forcing Crimean Tatars out of Crimea.

“What should we do? I do not think Ukraine should wait for the court to deliver its verdict. The occupation authorities are waiting for a response from the international community and Ukrainian society. The Ukrainian Parliament should make a statement that the EU and US would impose tougher sanctions against Russia if the Mejlis is banned,” Bariyev said.
