Russia and its President Vladimir Putin pose a more serious threat to the world community than the "Islamic state", according to the opinion of Republican Senator John McCain he shared in an interview with Australian Broadcasting, ABC News reports.

McCain stressed that Russia continues to try interfering in the domestic politics of other states, in particular, with the aim of changing the course of the elections in France and the United States.

"I am considering Vladimir Putin, who has dismembered Ukraine, a sovereign nation, who is putting pressure on the Baltics, and I view Russians as a far greater challenge as that we have," the senator said.

According to McCain, the US Congress should consider tightening sanctions against Russia after the parliamentary holidays.
