US Senator John McCain urged US President Donald Trump to expand sales of lethal weapons to Ukraine, according to the statement on the official website of the senator.

McCain said that the authorized sale of weapons and ammunition should be the first step in helping Ukraine. He further noted that such a decision should have been taken long ago.

"I urge the President to authorize additional sales of defensive lethal weapons, including anti-tank munitions, and to fully utilize security assistance funds provided by the Congress to enable Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said.

Earlier, the White House approved the supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine, including the anti-tank complexes Javelin, but links this decision with the start of a peacekeeping operation in the Donbas. With the help of arms supplies, Washington hopes to persuade the Ukrainian government to agree to a peacekeeping operation in the Donbas and at the same time to give a signal to Russia that the West will provide military support to Kyiv if peace efforts fail.
