By trying to get rid of the Crimean Tatars, Russia is employing the same methods the Soviet government was in 1944, when almost all Crimean Tatars were deported from Crimea, QHA cites Refat Chubarov, Mejlis Chairman and Ukrainian MP, as saying at a news conference held on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of deportation of the Crimean Tatars.

“18 Crimean Tatars are now behind bars. And more will join them soon. Fourteen Crimean Tatars have been charged with organizing and preparing terror attacks,” Refat Chubarov said.

According to Chubarov, the occupation authorities are trying to deceive the Europeans by creating a false perception of the Russian government, which is fighting non-existent Islamic extremists, and not the Crimean Tatars.

“By conducting repressions against Crimean Tatars, Russia is pursuing the same objective Stalin was, i.e. clear the peninsula of the Crimean Tatar people, but in a different, hybrid, way. They want to make Crimean Tatars leave their homeland due to the repressions,” said Refat Chubarov.

Just a reminder: After being accused of collaboration with the Nazis, Crimean Tatars were deported en masse on May 18, 1944. Of some 238 thousand Crimean Tatars, 46%, mostly elderly people, women and children, died in special settlements in the first years of deportation.

To commemorate the 72nd anniversary of Crimean Tatars’ deportation, a number of events, including rallies, flash mobs, lessons at schools and NGOs and activists’ initiatives, will be held in Kiev and all over Ukraine.
