The Russian Federation launched a criminal investigation into the murder of its pilot, whose plane was shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet after violating Turkish air space.

“Following preliminary investigation, it was decided to open a criminal investigation into the murder of a Russian military pilot Oleg Peskov,” Interfax quotes a senior Russian official as saying.

The official went on to say that an investigation and court trial already got underway.

The Su-24 fighter jet, which was on a combat mission in Syria, was shot down by an F-16 fighter jet of the Turkish Air Force on November 24, 2015. Turkey accused the Russian aircraft of violating its airspace.

The Russian Federation insisted that the plane was flying strictly over the Syrian territory.

Pilot Oleg Peshkov, who bailed out from the downed plane, was murdered by ground fire, while his co-pilot survived.
